When Hope Is Put to the Test
The Bible does not present hope as naive optimism or as the certainty that everything will necessarily turn out the way we want it to. Biblical hope rests first and foremost on God, on His faithfulness, His promises, and His character. It enables us to continue believing even when our eyes cannot yet see anything, because faith looks beyond present circumstances.
This truth runs throughout Scripture. The psalmists learn to wait for the Lord in the midst of trials; the prophets remind us of His faithfulness when all seems lost; and the New Testament reveals in Jesus Christ a hope that transcends even the limits of our present existence.
